Gynecology Q & A

Why do I need an annual well-woman exam?

Your well-woman exam focuses on routine preventive health care, because gynecologic problems may not cause symptoms at first.

When you come in for an annual exam, your doctor at North County Women’s Specialists can detect the earliest signs and treat problems before they progress to cause serious complications.

Another important advantage of your well-woman exam is that it gives you time to talk to your doctor. This is your opportunity to discuss any concerns you may have, whether you’re thinking about having a baby or you’re concerned about your weight.

What should I expect during my annual gynecology exam?

Your annual exam includes a review of your medical history and a check of your weight and blood pressure. After performing a breast and pelvic exam, your doctor may order blood work for routine health screening or to evaluate a concern that was found during your exam.

Depending on your age and health needs, you may receive one or more of these services during your annual exam:

  • Birth control
  • Pap smear
  • STD testing
  • HPV screening
  • HPV immunization
  • Preconception planning
  • Menopause management
  • Hormone replacement therapy

Your doctor may also screen for chronic health conditions, such as diabetes and high cholesterol. You’ll also be reminded if you’re due for other recommended health screenings. For example, you may need osteoporosis, breast cancer, or colon cancer screenings.

When should I seek medical attention for gynecological problems?

The team at North County Women’s Specialists encourages you to call when you have worrisome symptoms or questions about your health. However, you should schedule an appointment when you have symptoms such as:

Heavy periods or abnormal uterine bleeding

Abnormal bleeding, such as periods that last longer than seven days, bleeding between periods, or bleeding after menopause, may be signs of problems like uterine fibroids, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), or cancer.

Pelvic pain, pressure, or abdominal bloating

Many possible conditions can cause these symptoms, including ovarian cysts, endometriosis, and pelvic inflammatory disease.

Other symptoms that should be evaluated include:

  • Vaginal itching or burning
  • Painful periods
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Frequent and urgent need to urinate

In many conditions, the symptoms overlap. For example, pelvic pain and heavy bleeding are signs of endometriosis, while pelvic pain and abdominal bloating may indicate the presence of ovarian cysts.
